Regardless of how strongly I or some residents of NZ feel about the reintroduction of the death penalty, we have to face the fact that sometimes the Jury and Judge can be wrong.
For example: Teina Pora, back in 1994 a 17 year old NZ gang member who was wrongly convicted of the rape and murder of Susan Burdett in 1992. He was only believed to be the murderer after making various inconsistent confessions. Therefore because of what the police and investigators found/assumed, along with the juries decision Teina Pora served 22 years in jail as an innocent man.
Now if the death penalty was still legal when this case had occurred. An innocent man would have been sentenced to receive the lethal injection. By the time he was found to be innocent it would have been too little too late and the New Zealand Justice system would receive a huge negative blow from the public.
To be sure that implications like this don’t happen in the future, the jury, Investigators and Police will need to be very clearly correct in all their findings and conclusions to be sure that they are sending a guilty man to jail.

Maybe you could change the last paragraph to say how technologies have improved and there is less chance of people being wrongly convicted these days. instead of saying police should try be 100% correct. just seems a little stronger in my opinion.

As Savannah mentioned “Regardless of how strongly I or residents of New Zealand feel”, not all residents of NZ will agree with your debate as strongly as you do so maybe something along the lines like “how strongly I or some/ many residents of New Zealand.”
Other than that, your argument has been a great read and the information you provided was valid and relevant to what you were trying to say. 🙂

I agree with Savannah and Tereise’s comments. I understand the message you are trying to convey maybe just with a bit of rewording you could make it clearer for other readers? Also a note to be careful about statements you make such as “will need to be 100%” unless you have clear evidence or reasoning to support said statement. Otherwise good job. 🙂

This is a great counter claim. You do have some proof reading to do, but i am sure you will fix that up. As sam mentioned be careful of some statements, as you will need evidence to prove them. Also what if the killing was for self defence? I am sure you could not say that they deserve the death penalty? Even though I am all for the death penalty, I feel as though it would be like taking a major risk. As the last thing we want is an innocent dying for a crime which they did not commit. Very controversial topic which I enjoy arguing about. Keep it up. 😀
